Marcus Hook Elementary School, Renovations and Additions
Marcus Hook, Pennsylvania
Marcus Hook Elementary School, built in 1925, was transformed completely for education in the 21st century. This K to 4 school is situated in the center of the borough. The school district was committed to keeping its neighborhood elementary schools within easy walking distance for students and providing state-of-the-art technology. Classrooms were designed for flexibility and multiple uses, allowing for spaces to serve constantly shifting educational paradigms.
The architectural elements of the original building were incorporated into the design. Most notably, the historical significance of the building pediment—Marcus Hook Grammar School—was enclosed within a glass vestibule, visible from the street.
The addition provides ADA-compliant access to all floor levels. Additional space was situated to complement the existing streetscape and includes a new main office, library, kindergarten, media center and computer classroom. Students and the public now are welcomed by the illuminated clock tower.
"As a former teacher at Marcus Hook Elementary School, it was great to see the building restored to its earlier beauty and updated to provide the newest technology during my superintendence," says Barbara DiMarino, superintendent.
