ATS&R teamed with the city of Maple Grove, the Osseo Maple Grove Basketball Association, and Independent School District 279 on a community gymnasium addition to Maple Grove Junior High School. Space needs, joint-use opportunities, site/building design concepts, costs and schedules were considered during the feasibility study.
The $8.1 million, 43,000 square-foot expansion added three tournament courts (six practice courts), a concession/commons area, spectator seating, a community education office, restrooms and a separately zoned entrance.
According to the owner groups, the addition maximizes space and provides more opportunities for students and the community. Basketball, pickleball, volleyball and other activities now take place at the gym. If the district isn’t using the space, the gyms are available for community recreation.
“This has really been a great collaborative effort,” said Maple Grove Mayor Mark Steffenson. “It’s going to create a lot of new and wonderful opportunities for our residents and children. This has already created a new opportunity for third and fourth graders; they now have a full winter program. Next year there is going to be a kindergarten program started.”
