Macomb Intermediate School District, Educational Service Center
Clinton Township, Michigan
Serving 21 districts, Macomb Intermediate School District is the primary resource for special education and student services, as well as instructional and educational training for faculty and staff in the Macomb County area. Growing programs include Head Start, preschool and assessment services and other support-related services, and the existing building spaces were taxed to their limit.
The primary goals for the Educational Service Center included increased space for the district’s nationally recognized special-services program, new training and office spaces, and the transformation of the existing building into a more consumer-friendly place. The design incorporates the addition of a large, single-story conference center and a three-story element with training spaces on the first and second floors, and offices on the third floor.
The programming effort demonstrated a critical need for large and small training rooms, computer technology training labs, a distance-learning room, Head Start classroom, as well as spaces for infants and small children to play in a supervised learning environment. Flexibility of all spaces was the primary concern, so every space could be scheduled according to daily needs. Leading-edge adaptable technology was a second program requirement, enabling various groups to readily use any training space—regardless of their hardware requirement—and still accommodate technology advances with no modification to the infrastructure.
