Lockport Township High School, East Campus
Lockport, Illinois
Faced with a burgeoning student population, Lockport Township High School responded with a major expansion program at its East Campus facility. Goals of the program included: accommodate/expand from a 1,000-student to a 3,000-student facility; integrate technology into every phase of curriculum and facility programs; incorporate community use; provide a distinct architectural/community statement to the expanded facility, while completely renovating 80,000 square feet of existing space.
To accomplish these goals, the architect collaborated with administrators, faculty, staff, students and community members to integrate programming and technology elements. The Community Wellness Center, complete with a swimming pool, fieldhouse, running track, fitness, weightroom and dance studios, provides a complete physical-fitness program for students and the community.
The performing-arts center combines performing, visual and musical arts programs into the sophisticated complex. The full working stage provides a professional fly gallery, lighting and sound systems, for student and community productions.
The renovated/expanded media center brings in natural lighting, and includes student/community computer rooms, new technology and a multimedia-retrieval system.
Fiber optics are wired to each classroom through data ports allowing for multiple computers to be connected to the network, giving access to the Internet, multimedia and distance learning. This high school with Internet connections and fiber optic infrastructure is one of the most technologically advanced high schools in the country.
