Lincoln K-8 School, Addition/Renovation
Peoria, Illinois
This addition of grades K-4 improved the overall learning environment at Lincoln School. Because of its proven physical and psychological benefits, nature will play a much more prominent role in the future of education for Lincoln students. Abundant natural light now penetrates into the learning environments through larger classroom windows, a courtyard, and common areas. Upon entering the former school, no views to the exterior were apparent, and existing classrooms had only the code-required number of windows. The 68,000-square-foot addition of classrooms, media center, cafeteria, and support spaces now provides an entirely new environment.
A new entry features a panoramic view of Peoria’s beautiful east bluff. The cafeteria curtain wall and clerestory windows not only capture the once hidden beauty of the bluff, they allow north light to flood into large open spaces. Classrooms, which borrow additional natural light from the corridors, are configured so students can experience the natural landscape while learning. Classroom design gives students the opportunity to refresh, so they remain alert and positive throughout each learning period.
