Lee`s Summit West High School, Summit Ridge Academy
Lee`s Summit, Missouri
The Lee’s Summit West High School and Summit Ridge Academy campus is the first “brick-and-mortar” facility in Missouri designed specifically for a non-traditional, alternative student population. The school’s primary objective was to create a dynamic learning environment with the flexibility to accommodate various teaching methodologies, organizational models, evolving technology, changing educational goals, increasing enrollment, and a variety of student and community activities.
Defined by two distinct shapes, Lee’s Summit West features a crescent-shaped academic wing and a wedge-shaped activity area. The crescent shape maximizes natural lighting in the learning areas with exterior windows in most classrooms. The wedge-shaped activity area intersects the crescent to create a secure courtyard for student circulation and activities. The media center was situated in the activity area to encourage individualized learning and research. It offers easy access to resources for all students and staff.
Summit Ridge Academy, the district’s alternative school, complements the crescent shape of the high school in a separate building that allows shared use of facilities and provides the alternative school with its own identity and independence.
