Las Positas College, Barbara F. Mertes Center for the Arts
Livermore, California
This 55,000-square-foot performing-arts center was a design-build-bid project. The Barbara F. Mertes Center for the Arts contains a 500-seat proscenium theater, a 150-seat black-box theater, a 1,500-seat amphitheater and an art gallery. The center also contains all support spaces, rehearsal halls and classrooms for the theater arts, music and speech programs. The project also includes two parking lots.
The center offers many sustainability features, such as sustainable sites; water efficiency; white roof energy optimization; individual thermal control; recycled, regional and certified materials; and no VOCs. The building also is an educational tool.
Close teamwork with the construction manager, program manager, IOR, college administration, faculty and other consultants mitigated any problems and enabled the project to stay on schedule. The project had minimal change orders. This is a LEED silver-certified project.
