“There is more information available outside of schools than inside of schools. If getting information were the sole function of schools, then schools would be antiquated. A school is not just bricks and mortar, but a social setting, a supportive, nurturing environment. We need school facilities that offer flexibility for multiple venues for learning,” says former superintendent Robert Spencer.
Responding to this challenge, Lakeview High School enables formal and informal learning to occur within this highly flexible facility.
The school is organized into learning villages of 150 students each that surround a multipurpose courtyard. These villages open onto the two-story media arbor—a media center without walls and flooded with daylight, which encourages student use and challenges accepted notions of what a high school media center should be.
The Arbor Trail is a great space that links the building’s activities, secures the building for community use, and provides informal learning opportunities.
Wireless technology enables learning to occur throughout, not just in classrooms. Daylighting permeates the facility and contributes to student achievement, health and energy efficiency.
