Lakeland Community College, Health & Innovation Center
Kirtland, Ohio
Lakeland Community College determined that it needed to expand its Health Technologies program. A main objective for the project was to create a leading-edge learning space that would closely simulate healthcare environments that students would be entering upon graduation.
The relationship between the new building masses and the existing building allowed for the creation of a three-story atrium that would become the heart of the new project and campus. The atrium provides visual connections to the different academic cores as seen through the atrium on different levels.
“Hive,” a 10,000-square-foot innovation space, occupies two major areas of the building. The main programmatic space on the west side of ground floor is separated on two levels by a tiered seating area with open meeting rooms and a wood shop/electronics makerspace. Hive manifests itself in reconfigurable classrooms, social areas and an area for a “pop-up shop” for items created in the makerspace. The importance of Hive is the educational programming being developed that students will use after graduating.
