Lafayette School Corporation, Career Academy
Lafayette, Indiana
The Career Academy provides hands-on training in simulated workspaces to prepare high school students for technical and trade professions prior to graduation. Courses and training at the academy include career options such as health science, information technology, culinary arts, and Project Lead the Way. It sets the tone for higher expectations of those attending class there.
A 98,000-square-foot commercial building was repurposed to accommodate the academy. The project was completed in two phases. The initial phase included renovating 60% of the two-story building. A modern and inviting entry welcomes students into the academy; the main and lower levels showcase classrooms and labs including an advanced manufacturing lab, auto service technology classroom, agriculture classroom, and program spaces for aviation, welding, advanced manufacturing, construction trades, and automotive technology.
Founded in 1855, the Lafayette School Corporation oversees twelve K-12 schools. With a growing population and demand for more classrooms, the school system collaborated with Keystone Architecture to develop a multimillion-dollar master plan. Among the most important steps in the plan was establishing the Career Academy.
