La Cumbre Junior High School, Auditorium Modernization
Santa Barbara, California
La Cumbre Junior High School is Santa Barbara’s oldest intermediate school. The Spanish-style school was designed in 1926 and is housed on a 21.95-acre campus on the Westside of Santa Barbara. Since the school’s opening in 1928, the 1,063-seat auditorium has been used as both an educational facility and a community auditorium.
The La Cumbre Junior High School Auditorium Modernization was funded by a voter-approved $75 million local bond issue. Santa Barbara Unified School District collaborated with PMSM Architects to identify and develop the scope of work. The modernization focused on enhancing the overall educational experience, and making the auditorium marketable for larger professional and public performances.
Modernization included:
Renovation and Restoration: stage front, wood flooring, seating refurbishment, proscenium surround, proscenium grille, ceiling beams and finishes, lobby and auditorium finishes.
Replacement: carpeting, acoustical tile with acoustical-fabric-wrapped wall panels and decorative surrounds, chandeliers and winches, stage doors, and light fixtures.
Upgrades: accessibility, fire/life safety, sound and lighting control room/teaching space, acoustical, audio visual systems, dressing rooms, backstage area and installed new HVAC system.
