Kentwood Public Schools Early Childhood Center
Kentwood, Michigan
The new Early Childhood Center for Kentwood Public Schools is a reimagined learning environment, founded upon principles of educational excellence, safety, and equity. The design concept, “Neighbors: we are the world,” creates a nurturing foundation for early learners by using familiar building shapes and introducing diversity through a vibrant rainbow of colors.
A welcoming lobby connects families to administrative and community areas, and Imagination Station, a multipurpose room at the heart of the building, encourages movement and play. Two classroom wings extend in a “V” formation, each featuring eight classrooms along an expansive, daylight-filled commons corridor designed for collaboration and informal learning. Interior elements are scaled to the child’s experience, including hallway windows with built-in benches, cozy house-like niches, and textured sensory zones. Playful cloud-shaped lighting, colorful acoustic panels, and rainbow baffles enhance both function and delight. Radiant floor heating improves comfort, and durable, easy-to-clean materials support longevity.
