Katherine Thomas Elementary School for grades pre-K to 3 is one part of a restructuring of the Windham Exempted Village School system. The new building replaces an aging school of the same name.
The one-story school is designed with major spaces for fine arts, media center, administration, gymnasium and stage/cafeteria along the front of the plan. Three wings perpendicular to the front each contain academic classroom pods. Pod A houses eight pre-K and kindergarten classrooms; Pod B houses eight first- and second-grade classrooms; and Pod C includes five third-grade classrooms and three special-education/special-resource rooms. Each pod contains a teacher planning room, materials-storage area and faculty restroom.
The classroom pods have shingled pitched roofs with dormers, which provide ventilation. The gymnasium, cafeteria and media center have higher pyramid-shaped roofs topped with a skylight and form a tri-part staggered bar across the front of the building.
