Jonathan Dayton High School Instructional Media Center
Springfield, New Jersey
The library at Jonathan Dayton High School in Springfield, N.J., was constructed as a multilevel addition in the early 1970s and had remained mostly unchanged. Housing a shrinking collection rarely used by students, the space was reimagined by this tech-savvy district as a a true media center and maker space.
The goal was to provide the latest technology in an accessible environment for collaborative, project-based learning via print, A/V and interactive global connectivity. The new design provides a TV classroom, a studio and control room, an information desk, an audio lab, shelving for the remaining collection, flexible seating and collaborative work areas.
The former sloped ceiling was replaced with a series of stepped acoustic clouds that span all levels. Glazed openings now provide transparency between uses and increase supervision and security. The neutral color palette is brightened and enlivened by the school’s colors of orange and blue. A handicap lift provides accessibility to all three levels.
The pièce de résistance of the media center is the technology. It has up-to-date TV, video and audio equipment, a 9-unit video wall for distance learning, video kiosks and mediascape collaboration, and project-based equipment, audio booth and work stations. Students can broadcast activity in the space and to connected venues around the school, district and community.
