The new facility focuses on career and technical education (CTE). The heart of the design is learning on display, taking cues from a shopping mall and placing the CTE spaces along the school’s central commons to support visibility and underscore importance. Flexible corridors and breakout spaces provide opportunities for student-centered learning, encouraging group project work and promoting collaboration, engagement, and cross-disciplinary interaction.
The strategic use of color and materials visually differentiates various programmatic functions and their efficient use of space. A blue ribbon element traces around CTE programs to frame the school’s focus, and wood cladding designates administrative areas. Green accents spotlight collaborative spaces, and orange panel systems and paint define vertical circulation to aid in navigation.
Use of an in-depth benchmarking process resulted in a compact footprint that extends vertically instead of horizontally, reducing construction costs and enhancing safety and security by decreasing the number of exterior entrances. An efficient exterior, abundant natural light, and a rainwater harvesting system also help reduce energy consumption and cost for the district.
