Jefferson Elementary School (Carlsbad, Calif.)
Carlsbad, California
Jefferson Elementary School replaced the existing 45-year-old buildings in the district. The school’s six buildings are clustered around a secured, landscaped courtyard and amphitheater. A covered walkway links the multipurpose building, library and administration with the five classroom building pods.
The multipurpose room has a raised platform with under-stage chair storage and a foldout table storage system built in to the perimeter wall. A full-service kitchen serves directly into the multipurpose room and an adjacent outdoor covered lunch court with a translucent roof panel system.
The landscaped entrance courtyard serves as an entry foyer to the multipurpose room, library and administration “front doors.”
Technology is incorporated into all classrooms, library and administration. The teacher’s workstation, which is integrated into the teaching wall, provides multimedia capabilities. A large-screen monitor can display output from a personal computer, VHS tape, laser disc, CCTV, cable TV or distance learning. The teacher’s workstation also can serve as a small-group instruction area.
The building’s exterior is stucco, concrete columns and a prefinished metal roof system. The stucco walls have been broken into a series of colored bands that reduce the buildings’ scale and better relate to the scale of children.
