James Madison University, Student Success & Health Center
Harrisonburg, Virginia
James Madison University bought the existing Rockingham Memorial Hospital as a step toward expanding the campus to the north. In doing so, the university could accomplish several goals: centralizing student service programs, providing an attractive location for students to gather for social and academic purposes, and defining a new entry to the Bluestone Campus.
JMU Associate Vice President of Student Success Randy Mitchell described the new space as a “collaborative environment designed to support student learning, student health and student services….With so many different departments and areas in the new Success Center, providing students with advice and assistance for a variety of financial, curricular, technical and employment concerns has become more effective.”
The Student Success Center was designed to be a welcoming space focused on making students and their needs a priority. Community spaces include an open and active furnished lobby and conference rooms, and innovative learning environments such as cluster and scale-up classrooms. The center offers increased amenities for a Learning Resource Center, Disability Services and Judicial Affairs. A University Health Center offers counseling rooms, exam rooms, medical and specialty clinics, physical therapy procedural rooms, radiology, pharmacy, administrative offices, wellness and outreach, and storage. The center’s food service component includes a restaurant and a market for fast-food options. Improvements to the exterior focused on glazing to maximize the facility’s transparency, promote interaction and attract students.
The center and its surrounding area conform to the university’s approved master plan guidelines and have become the main entry into the Bluestone Area of campus. The university has created a unique facility that offers a broad range of services and resources in a central location.
