Indiana Wesleyan University, Chapel-Auditorium
Marion, Indiana
Before construction of the Chapel-Auditorium, Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU) held chapel services in the 1,200-seat Performing Arts Center. The growing university needed more space to accommodate its 3,200 students. The architect and IWU analyzed current and projected enrollment and the campus master plan to determine size and programming for a new chapel facility.
The architect worked with the construction manager to build the largest construction project in IWU history. Completed two months ahead of schedule in November 2009, the $22 million, 3,800-seat Chapel-Auditorium will host chapel services three times per week, as well as seminars, meetings and musical performances for the Marion community.
Seating is on the main level and balcony level; the balcony seating extends on the sides down to the main level, creating two intermediate loge seating sections. Students sitting anywhere in the auditorium can walk to the stage without using a stairway or an elevator.
The facility provides a place to reinforce the IWU World Changers Mission, and to serve as a place for worship and spiritual development.
