Indiana University, Wells Library Scholars’ Commons
Bloomington, Indiana
The goal of the Scholars’ Commons space was to create a unique, inspiring learning environment that supported multiple functions and stimulated scholarship. Working within the existing footprint, the design reconfigured the library to maximize usable space, showcase the exterior view, and celebrate the existing architecture. The once disjointed and underused space now features an open plan with multiple computer stations, lounge areas, and various study tables that surround a core cluster of high-tech consultation rooms.
Researchers, whether faculty, staff, or students, come first in this space. With a variety of individual and collaborative spaces, users can inhabit the area that best suits their needs. The library is optimized for technology ranging from laptops and mobile devices to the multiscreen IQ Wall.
Materials used throughout the space incorporate both form and function. Bold crimson in carpet patterns, soft seating, and workstations punctuate the space and reinforce the Indiana University brand. The large media room features retractable glass doors for greater flexibility. A suspended ceiling panel system discreetly integrates lighting, sprinkler and mechanical functions.
