Indiana University School of Medicine, Ernestine Raclin and O.C. Carmichael Jr. Hall
South Bend, Indiana
This new shared facility adjacent to the University of Notre Dame campus strengthens a public-private medical education partnership that began in 1968.
The Indiana University School of Medicine conducts classes for the first two years of medical school in the building, which also houses Notre Dame’s W.M. Keck Center for Transgene Research and shared research space for both universities. Special facilities such as labs, exam rooms and a 250-seat auditorium allow for new areas of research and educational programs that benefit faculty, students and health professionals.
Architectural elements respect the campus and neighborhood while establishing a new identity for the program. This enhanced awareness has helped increase the number of medical students applying for placement at the IU—South Bend campus by about 75 percent.
“This building supports the collaborative success of IU and the University of Notre Dame as we improve our medical education and become a national center of excellence in medical research,” says Rudolph M. Navari, director and assistant dean of IU School of Medicine—South Bend and director of the Notre Dame Cancer Institute.
