The charge was to transform an existing open commons area into a collegiate-type atmosphere suitable for study, small-group collaboration and dining. The commons hosts a breakfast program and serves as the high school seniors’ dining area.
Commons functions are enhanced by the adjoining media center (with more traditional study resources) and a student gallery that showcases works from the industrial and visual arts, music and drama performances, and academic exhibits.
The learning lab serves as the primary program area for Indiana’s Digital Education Academy for Learning (IDEAL) program — an in-house online learning option that blends traditional coursework with onsite guided instruction and online coursework completed offsite.
The IDEAL program incorporates software development and electronic gaming courses in which students can work independently or in collaboration. The gaming lab is configurable for digital presentations of student work.
The blended learning lab accommodates a variety of learning styles and student activities. A warm environment invites collaboration in some areas while maintaining quiet work space for individuals preferring privacy and focus. A tiered seating area enables students to maintain personal space or engage socially. It can host small group instruction for up to 14 people.
