This reuse prototype development design, using a Mediterranean Revival style, was adapted to fit into a new-urbanism neighborhood. While the architectural style blends with the neighborhood, it also creates a visual impact that emphasizes the importance of the facility within the community. Preserving the natural beauty of the wooded site, the design’s features enhance school safety and security by paying careful attention to sightlines, functional flow and circulation.
Educational flexibility is provided in the modular design, which focuses on technology and the positive interaction among students and staff. The common area’s open layout, at the heart of the school, provides for gathering and interaction in a supervised environment. The compact design uses varied heights in the structures to capitalize on the volume of space and natural light. Visually and spatially, the curved exterior wall design and secured courtyard establish the character and identity of the building. From a security standpoint, these curved visual sightlines help provide a safer environment for the students and staff because the building has no hiding places, and visual supervision is maximized.
