Illinois State University, Bone Student Center Revitalization
Normal, Illinois
The Bone Student Center’s location at the extreme north end of the main campus quadrangle dictates that it become the north gateway to the campus. The building and site design reinforce this opportunity by replacing a blank concrete wall with a grand stairway adjacent to the new entry pavilion, which aligns with pedestrian access to the north and a bridge to the main quad.
The pavilion becomes the new entry to the Bone Student Center and the ?rst point of contact for campus visitors. The addition has been conceived as a modern interpretation of the Georgian architecture present on the quad. The primary materials of limestone and brick connect the addition to the surrounding campus material palette.
The overall project includes a relocated catering kitchen, a redesigned loading dock, expanded dining venues, administrative offices and improved entrances on the west and east sides of the existing facility. A campus welcome center occupies the third floor of the new pavilion and showcases views overlooking the beautiful landscape of the quad.
