Huntington East Middle School
Huntington, West Virginia
Cabell County Schools is currently pursuing its first LEED Silver Certified Middle School. The building and curriculum will encourage 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams to compete against each other in energy consumption by providing technology to track energy usage throughout the year. Through online learning and technology systems throughout the facility, students will be able to also work with and compete with facilities throughout the world.
A pulper system will be in place to not only consume kitchen waste but also all paper waste throughout the school. The students will be able to take this product and provide compost for the school’s vegetable gardens, which will provide additional produce for the "farm-to-table" program at the school.
The brick façade is accented with metal panels and highlighted with large amounts of glass that naturally light the classrooms. A curved corridor divides the building while slowly widening and developing into the art room. The exterior curved façade along the corridor is emphasized with copper finished metal panels.
