Hofius Intermediate School is dynamic and multifunctional. The Klein district wanted to create “choice” and enable students to select the size of the space they wanted to work in, the type of furniture they wanted to use, the kind of technology they needed, and how much visual and acoustical privacy a project required.

The school is divided into learning communities for sixth grade, STEM and humanities. Each community is functionally independent, offering a two-story “pod” with classrooms, labs, administrative offices and collaboration space. Classroom pods connect visually and physically to an open learning commons. The commons is a central space that incorporates library concepts with technology, small group learning zones and a maker space; the commons also connects to athletics, assembly space and the cafetorium.

Windows and outdoor areas are strategically placed to maximize daylight, enhance the openness of the building, create security and provide unique outdoor learning opportunities.

Movable walls, a tiered dining area and multipurpose common areas are just some of the flexible features that make Hofius adaptable for 21st-century learning.
