Township High school District 113 commissioned Perkins and Will to provide master planning, design and oversight for building renovations, selective demolition, additions and new construction for the District’s two high schools located in Highland Park and Deerfield, Illinois.

The master planning process centered on reimagining the existing facilities to provide for future ready learning. Given the existing campuses were built over many generations, the project needed to deal with a backlog of deferred infrastructure needs and address outdated educational environments. The Community supported an $89 million referendum for the improvements and the District provided an additional $25 million through capital projects funding.

At Highland Park High School, new academic facilities were added to the core of the campus, replacing aging physical education facilities that were rebuilt and consolidated elsewhere on campus. The upgrades improved security, campus connectivity, traffic flow and wayfinding while positioning the school for future improvements.

The improvements at Deerfield High school incorporated many of the same elements: improving educational environments, replacing and upgrading building systems, expanding physical education facilities and improving the library to meet the needs of the facility as it moves to the future.

Long-term facilities planning was a priority for the District to ensure the schools were flexible enough to accommodate changing pedagogies and future improvements.
