Herricks High School Café/Commons
New Hyde Park, New York
Contrary to the old belief that a school cafeteria is a dining-only facility, the Herricks High School Café & Commons aims to facilitate personal contact and social interaction among students. Highly flexible in its layout, the space functions as a commons area and social hub creating a dining environment that rivals any commercial dining experience—from the color palette, material selections, and furnishings to lighting, equipment and food presentation.
Serving nearly 500 meals per day, the new space offers full Wi-Fi internet capabilities and built-in audiovisual systems and TV screens along the serving line—key for multi-use presentation of daily menus, health tips, and school announcements. By using glazed-wall assemblies along the perimeter, the elongated room visually opens into the adjacent corridor and the outdoor courtyard beyond, deliberately turning the area into a destination and friendly meet-up spot.
The interior design incorporates modern materials and patterns in an effort to create a dynamic and flexible space. Since its opening, the Café & Commons has become a popular destination for students.
