Hermantown High School

After evaluating needs in Hermantown Schools, district leaders concluded that building a new high school and relocating the middle school students to the existing high school would provide many benefits. The design team set out to create a learning environment inspired by a Northern Minnesota palette where every space had the possibility of being usable educational space for staff, students and the community.
The result is a two-story building organized around two cores: a digital commons and a student commons. Classrooms, labs, support spaces and conference rooms surround the digital commons, which is a re-envisioned concept of the media center that has a variety of learning spaces without traditional bookshelves. Additionally, the kitchen, office, athletics and performing arts areas surround the student commons, which is used for dining and other large group and community functions.
The building has minimal corridors; all other space is focused on extending the learning environment beyond the classroom. Support space for independent work, group projects, and special education areas are situated alongside classrooms to accommodate different styles of learning.
