Hastings High School (Hastings, Minn.)
Hastings, Minnesota
Hastings’ vision to create a facility serving as “a bridge connecting students to other students” guided the interactive, community-based planning. The 354,000-square-foot high school is on a 93-acre campus near the Mississippi River. The design uses the downtown’s main street and the river as a metaphor—complete with an island-shaped media center, commons “river motif” floor covering and “Hastings bridge” connector.
A passive commons, nine subdivided staff centers situated adjacent to locker clusters to preserve student-to-student, staff-to-student communication, acts as a “pedestrian street” and interlinks with the “active commons.”
The active commons is a three-story social/community space joining the following with the academic house wings: 1,000-seat auditorium; five-station gymnasium; two-story media center; and applied-technology area.
Its varying functions include dining, daytime socialization, before/after school pressure relief and community evening events.
The educational design successfully links the fabric of Hastings, its heritage, tradition of progress and strong investment to bring the experience of learning to new levels.
