For the new fine-arts center, Hamilton/Sussex School District requested a 750-seat auditorium with full-fly house, and an advanced computerized sound and lighting system. A new band room, large-set construction workshop, dressing rooms and storage completed the program.

Stone was used to perpetuate the local stone quarrying industry, and establish a rich and neutral palette both on the exterior and interior.

The ashlar patterning of masonry throughout the design, including a random pattern of window openings across the building, added a graphic verve, especially at night when illuminated from within. A curving polished-block auditorium wall is accented by a complex pattern of large-cut limestone insets that echo the patterned light from the window openings.

Custom cherry wood ceilings and paneling, as well as custom illuminated display cases, provide a place of prominence for student and community artwork, and add to the artistic feel of the performance space.
