Rockford Public Schools’ facility infrastructure is in dire need of improvements. The Rockford School Board approved a 10-year facilities plan in November 2012, and voters approved a bond referendum to pay for much of the plan. That plan enables the district to address several issues: 90-year-old heating boilers, a lack of adequate electrical and plumbing needs, cracked windows and other deficiencies. The district also is upgrading schools with additions, improvements and technology to support 21st-century learning.
The comfort, function and aesthetics of the library at Guilford High School had not been updated for at least 25 years. This renovation provides new finishes and furnishings and adds air conditioning and LED lighting. The goal was to create a central location for students to gather for individual learning, and perhaps most important, enable collaborative learning. The floor pattern, floating art elements and furniture complement one another and distinguish spaces without dividing the space with closed, confining rooms. The space now facilitates both large-group instructional teaching and small-group collaboration. It also offers lounge space for reading or socializing, and areas for computer research, all in one inspiring space.
