Grant Ragan Elementary
Waukee, Iowa
Design team: David Briden (Principal/Design Architect), Brian Bartlett (Structural Engineer), Richard Kyras (Specifications)
Grant Ragan Elementary is the eighth elementary in the Waukee Community School District and serves 750 students from pre-kindergarten to fifth grade. Working closely with administration and teaching staff, the design team gave careful attention to how the building is organized. The educational environment consists of three learning communities that surround a central circulation core. This minimizes the distance to shared program spaces such as the media center, technology labs, guidance, and music classrooms.
Each learning community represents core learning studios that share an open flexible activity space, providing a highly collaborative environment for students and staff. Vibrant colors were used throughout the rooms and corridors, and a continuous translucent panel clerestory window provides diffused natural light along the central core corridors. Daylight is brought into all parts of the school.
Addressing important security and safety protocols, the building employs a secure entry and separate bus and parent drop-off areas.
