The education department had not built a new school in more than 30 years. The site was selected because of its adjacency to Citizens’ Elementary School and the expanding residential neighborhood. Pothier was to be an extension of the Citizens School, and is designed for grades pre-K to 2.
The site was difficult because of the topography and a sewer easement that bisected the site and wetlands on the northwest corner. The architect used the topography to create a two-story design that provides pre-K and kindergarteners with a separate entrance, bus dropoff and play areas; the upper level anchors the main entrance, the administration, media center, gymnasium, cafetorium, 17 classrooms, and an art and music room.
Dubbed “Woonsocket’s new jewel,” the building has timeless architecture that provides strong geometry and appealing shapes. The inviting, contemporary entrance is a beacon for the large two-story skylighted space that embraces people as they enter, providing a warm, positive and creative atmosphere to foster learning. The warm pastel colors add charm to the interior spaces.
