To relieve crowding, the new K-5 elementary school was built to accommodate 610 students. The city intended to minimize costs without sacrificing quality, functionality, or aesthetics. Given the fast-rising expense of construction, the architect and city officials were up for the challenge. The team first saved time and money with an early site package that corrected numerous site problems. The small site was bordered by wetlands with steep wooded slopes and a sewer line cutting across it. Early site work expanded the site, nearly doubling its size, with engineered retaining walls, sewer relocation and sensitive wetlands replication. Site work was executed during the design phase, so when the general contractor arrived, all parties worked together to complete the project in less than 18 months. This saved the city over $18 million. Design and aesthetics of the new school were intended to preserve the historical and industrial contexts of the city, while providing a forward-thinking educational configuration that reflected the city’s vision for a 21st-century learning environment.
