Glenwood Ridge Elementary School

Glenwood Ridge Elementary School was designed to accommodate the growth in enrollment in the Basehor-Linwood School District. In an effort to maintain the close-knit fabric of a smaller community, the school was designed as a smaller attendance center. A traditional double-loaded corridor plan was modernized to allow parity with the district’s existing two elementary schools, while bringing the facility the freshness of today’s design flairs.
Computers in every classroom and connectivity to the outside via voice, data and full-motion broadcast-quality videoconferencing were integrated into the design. The virtual school design allows parents to continue lifelong learning at home and also monitor their children’s progress in the classroom. The students are connected to a rain forest and an observatory through the distance-learning program.
Color splashed throughout the building, with scale provided by detailing, textures and patterns, offers students a fun learning environment. Extended learning areas are provided outside the classroom in the commons area and media center. The commons area doubles as gathering and gallery space for the students, as well as a site for public events.
