Kingsville, Texas, is home to the historic King Ranch. The town’s regional Spanish Colonial architecture is reflected in many details of Gillett Intermediate School and nearby Texas A&M University—Kingsville.
The school contains 42 classrooms for fifth- and sixth-grade students. It includes a library, cafetorium, preparation kitchen for five campuses, computer and science labs, band and choir rooms, art studios, central offices, landscaped outdoor classroom settings, and separated, covered parent and bus dropoff areas.
The building supports the educational curriculum by using the latest technology, including an information tower with television screens. All classrooms have intranet access, networked LCD projectors, media retrieval and cable television for distance learning. Students benefit from natural lighting, including windows in each classroom; window walls in art studios, corridors and the library; and a 450-foot, computer-automated louvered skylight. Forty digital cameras support security. Energy-management software and automated lighting systems minimize energy consumption. Rubber floor tile absorbs sound and reduces maintenance costs.
