The West Village Dining Commons is a vibrant, hybrid, multipurpose facility created to provide a highly flexible destination for students, faculty and staff to engage and refuel. The facility includes seven different food venues, support kitchens and offices, four academic classrooms designed for music rehearsal, and ample dining, meeting, study and lounge spaces.
Replacing a traditional dining hall, the project uses a retail-based model to create an open, inviting environment with multiple entries on all three levels and seamless transitions from interior to exterior. Two open stairs, one inside and one outside, encourage vertical movement, and exterior porches on the upper levels serve as extensions of the programmed landscape areas at grade. Working closely with the food service operator to balance functionality and variety, the school offers dining options on all three floors, including a food hall atmosphere on the second level with five venues.
Integration with the site and campus context drove a highly sustainable architectural solution to re-imagine campus dining as a welcoming place to serve the entire campus community.
