George Mason University, Recreation and Athletic Complex
Fairfax, Virginia
Situated in a wooded area near the heart of campus, the new Recreation and Athletic Complex (RAC) has become the primary recreation destination for Mason’s students. Nearly doubling the original size of the building, the RAC contains three gymnasiums, two racquetball courts, two squash courts and a two-story fitness gallery. The facility is home to intramural sports, club sports, three intercollegiate sports, as well as classrooms and offices.
The bi-level fitness gallery includes cardiovascular machines and weight-training equipment, including selectorized and free-weight equipment. In addition, the fitness area has three multipurpose rooms that house various exercise programs. The RAC also features a refreshment center that not only offers post-workout nutritional shakes, but also creates a hub for student interaction.
The RAC features three gymnasiums. The newest venue, the RAC Gym, is home to Mason’s volleyball teams in addition to providing a competition venue for wrestling. The RAC Gym has seating for 1,550 and features three basketball courts, retractable bleachers, a state-of-the-art sound system and a second-story viewing area.
