Washington , District of Columbia
Design Team: Steven Orlansky, AIA, LEED AP; Richard Munday, AIA; Amy Daniels, AIA, LEED AP BD+C; Max Asare, AIA; Ina Kovacheva; Michelle Newman, IIDA; Wiles-Mench; Landscape Architecture Bureau; Silman; Global Engineering Solutions; Educational Systems Planning; Polysonics; GreenShape; ECS Corporate Services; BELL Architects, PC (JV Partner)
Newman collaborated with Bell Architects on the LEED Gold Certified modernization of Garrison Elementary School. Preceding the project’s initiation, Newman developed and facilitated a multilingual Community Visioning Charrette, in which members of the community collaborated on designs for the site and presented competing designs for debate and discussion. The project included a gut renovation to support the district’s educational specifications, envelope and energy improvements, and full systems replacement.
Classrooms were transformed into larger, more flexible spaces to accommodate multiple modes of learning. Glazed seating nooks, where children curl up with a book or observe activity along the adjacent hallway, are featured in each classroom, admitting natural light into the corridors and visual transparency. A new front entrance provides a more open and welcoming street presence.
The project includes a robust public art component commemorating the site’s history as a Civil War-era contraband camp, including a mural and commemorative site entry portals with contributions by local artists.
