Fulton-Montgomery Community College was constructed in 1969 to serve an enrollment of approximately 1,200 students. Since opening, the enrollment has reached 2,000. During that 26-year period no capital expansion projects were undertaken. The college’s first facility master plan, completed in 1993, identified major improvements to the campus entry, quadrangle and vehicular/pedestrian circulation system.
There were three programmatic challenges facing the project team: bringing the campus technologically into the 21st century, expanding the fine- and performing-arts facilities, and improving classroom and lab space. The construction challenge was in implementing a project that impacted the entire campus, while maintaining a full academic schedule. The latter challenge was met by developing surge space in the underutilized library for use by temporarily dislocated programs. The former challenge was addressed through renovations to the existing classroom/lab building, and the construction of the new annex housing the theater and fine-arts studios and TV production studio.
