FSU Earth Ocean Atmospheric Science Building
Tallahassee, Florida
In 2013, the Florida State University departments of geology, oceanography, and meteorology were combined into one department_ the Earth Ocean Atmospheric Science Department_ and FSU sought to create a dynamic new building to serve as home base for collaborative teaching and research. The architects were charged with developing academic space, teaching labs, and research labs aimed at attracting new students and developing new science with “collision-inspired” interactions. The architect responded with an efficient, no-space-wasted plan that envisioned the department’s activities interacting and evolving much like the changes that happen at the boundaries between earth’s air, water, and ground. The design incorporates four teaching labs, 16 computational labs, and 19 wet labs in open modules. Faculty researchers’ offices are close to labs and interspersed with student and open lounge areas to promote active conversation and learning. Incongruous research activities were managed with zoning and appropriate adjacencies. The building is a high-rise concrete and masonry structure with a brick north elevation and shaded southern curtain wall. Mechanical systems employ chilled beams and enthalpy wheel technology for energy efficiency.
