The Fruit Valley Community Learning Center houses a K-5 elementary school, a Head Start program, childcare, banking services and a family resource center. Neighborhood vision and strong community partnerships enabled the school district to open this cooperative facility that serves the local community while meeting educational goals for neighborhood children.
The elementary school serves 200 students, and is designed to accommodate the school district’s model of instruction in which students spend approximately one-third of their time in individual learning, one-third in small-group instruction, and one-third in large-group instruction. The facility has a small but fully equipped kitchen for lunches and breakfasts, and student and community activities. Most students eat two meals a day at the school. The cafeteria also functions as an art and music learning space via mobile teaching stations.
The local Child Care Consortium, operated by an Educational Service District, provides childcare. Head Start offers early learning opportunities to children ages 3 to 5 in full-day and partial-day programs. The resource center maintains a year-round clothes closet and food bank. A family resource liaison oversees the Family Resource Center, which provides books, videos and training for parents. A county-funded family-services coordinator provides counseling and referral services.
Through these efforts, the community is striving to prepare its children for success in the higher-education system. Recognized for its technology integration, Fruit Valley Community Learning Center is structured to offer learning opportunities for the whole community. The response to this new educational resource has been overwhelmingly positive. Because the demand for these services is expected to increase, facility expansion plans are underway.
