Friendship Learning Center, Addition and Renovation
North Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin
Improvements to the Friendship Learning Center helped create an expanded, modern learning space that inspires discovery and exploration for students in early childhood classes and grades pre-K to 5.
To accommodate future growth, the team designed a two-story academic addition for grades 2 to 5. Each grade level is organized into classroom “pods” that contain five classrooms arranged around a central resource area. Folding glass doors open the classrooms to the larger space to provide opportunites for collaborative teaching and learning.
Challenged to create a unifying theme throughout the building, the designers developed a “Learning Lands of Friendship” concept that serves both a physical and educational function. This theme assigned each grade level a different continent. Wall graphics identify cultural characteristics of each continent, providing teaching and learning content. A corresponding interior color palette provides wayfinding for students.
A new library, the central “hub” of the school, expands the exploration theme, using vertical space to spell out “Storyland.” The school also has a tiered learning stair at the entrance and a three-station gymnasium with a walking track.
