Friendship Learning Center
North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
Improvements to the Friendship Learning Center inspire discovery and exploration for students in early childhood programs through fifth grade in the School District of North Fond du Lac.
To accommodate future growth, the architect designed a two-story academic addition, grouping the spaces into classroom “pods.” Each pod contains five classrooms arranged around a central resource area. Folding glass doors open classrooms to the larger space and provide opportunity for collaborative teaching and learning.
For a unifying building theme, designers developed the “Learning Lands” concept to serve a physical and educational function. To provide educational content that teachers could reference in the classroom, each grade level was assigned a different continent, corresponding color scheme, and wall graphics that identify cultural, natural, and linguistic characteristics of each continent.
To realize the district’s vision for future planning and flexible spaces, the existing portion of the building was renovated and now provides right-sized classroom spaces and collaborative areas. Shared collaborative spaces were inserted between classrooms to provide flexible learning opportunities.
