Freiheit Elementary School

Freiheit Elementary School is one of Comal Independent School District’s newest campuses, serving more than 800 students in grades pre-K to 5. The school was part of a $189 million bond referendum approved by voters in 2005. It will serve as a prototype for future elementary schools in the district.
One of the features making it a successful design is the efficient layout. The compact configuration allowed for a smaller building footprint to minimize materials costs and site modification. The classroom wings also were designed to be extended easily to accommodate additional classroom growth needs.
Another feature the district wanted was the separation of loud and quiet spaces. The loud public spaces—cafeteria and gymnasium—are placed at the front of the school, and the quiet spaces—classrooms and library—are toward the back. Security elements allow for community use of the gymnasium and cafeteria after hours, without the ability to access the classrooms.
The materials were chosen with economy and life cycle in mind. Masonry was used on the building because of its track record in the district as a durable and maintainable surface.
