Franciscan University of Steubenville, Sts. Cosmas and Damian Science Hall

Situated among other academic buildings, Franciscan University of Steubenville’s New Science Hall helps form the educational hub of the campus and symbolizes the interdisciplinary unity of its liberal-arts program. The new structure is home to the departments of chemistry, biology, physics, engineering science, and math and computer sciences. The three four-story wings of the building are clustered around a lobby/atrium.
The smallest wing houses general classrooms and administrative services. The other two wings are of equal size and provide groupings of related labs, research and faculty office spaces. One wing also accommodates a stepped lecture room of 100 seats used as an interdisciplinary and assembly space for the entire campus.
The building is compatible with the designs of the newer buildings on campus, and its massing and orientation draw from the architectural heritage of St. Francis’ hometown of Assisi. The steel eave structure and terne-coated stainless-steel roof contrast with the exterior envelope of traditional brick and limestone.
