Fort Herriman Middle School
Herriman, Utah
Creating a sense of community inspired the architect’s design for the new Fort Herriman Middle School.
Individual learning neighborhoods enable each grade level to become a learning community of understandable and comfortable proportions. Students are known by the faculty and one another, and can experience large- and small-group learning activities. Students also can test their budding teenage social skills among friends.
Spaces are flexible and multipurpose, and reconfigure quickly to meet teaching needs. Appropriate collaboration space is provided for teacher interaction, coordination and training.
Natural light defines the character of this school. Windows throughout classrooms, the media center, common spaces and administrative offices connect learners to their environment, and offer needed visual rest and invigoration. They also reduce the need for artificial light, reduce heat loads within the school and therefore reduce the size of mechanical systems and energy consumption.
The design promotes a sense of belonging and understanding needed by young adult learners. The use of daylight establishes a bright and cheerful atmosphere.
