Florida State University, Bio Unit One, Third Floor Renovations

The Bio Unit One Building is a more-than-50-year-old laboratory building that has never been substantially renovated. Because of the condition of the facility, the entire third floor was demolished, and 10 new 660-square-foot, state-of-the-art biomedical labs were constructed. Supporting these labs are shared core labs, support labs, offices, collaboration areas, and conference rooms.
The new labs were not designed for specific researchers; they are meant to house collaborating principal investigators from different departments and possibly colleges. Fixed benches, sinks, and fume hoods are situated around the perimeter of the labs. The island units are completely flexible with shelving, benches, and cabinets that can be reconfigured or removed to suit individual needs. The islands are tethered to power, data, and compressed air via overhead services.
The color palette of red, yellow, and green is meant to evoke the biological theme of the labs and reference its past. Finish choices were made for durability and ease of maintenance. Furniture selections reflect on the origins of the building using mid-century-modern themed pieces.
