In response to the program requirements for a dining facility, the architect created a building that provides students with space for dining, meeting and late-night study. The dining hall acts as an angled link between the classrooms and the residence-hall facilities, with an exterior plaza to capture students along the way.
With a relatively small program area, creating dynamism was a design challenge. Procession through the building leads students into a central high-volume space, which opens onto both the kitchen and the main dining room. A tiered ceiling combined with punched clerestory windows provides natural lighting and height.
The majority of the construction budget was allocated to structure and equipment, so the architect used bold colors with strong geometric wave patterns to reflect the environment of south Florida. The result is an atmosphere that bridges the academic rigors of campus life with a relaxing social environment.
