Fayette County High School Auditorium Addition

The Fayette County School District had a goal of providing auditoria at all of its existing high schools to support its belief that schools exist to promote the intellectual, social, and personal development of students. The fine arts building addition at Fayette County High School was the final project in the achievement of that goal.
Completed in 2019, the addition blends seamlessly with the original high school. It includes a 565-seat auditorium, formal lobby, stage, dressing areas, lighting catwalk, scene shop, storage, connecting lobby, and band rehearsal suite. The auditorium features integrated production systems to support any type of presentation and performance, from single-speaker engagements to musical and dramatic arts.
For more than 25 years, Manley Spangler Smith Architects has enjoyed a productive working relationship with the school district, which has maintained a strong commitment to the fine arts. With more than 20,000 students in 24 schools, the Fayette County district serves more than 114,000 in south metro Atlanta. In addition to an open campus program, the district has five traditional high schools.
Fayette County High is known for its award-winning fine arts programs, including marching band, concert band and theater. Students in these programs have performed at the Florida Citrus Bowl, the Tournament of Roses parades, and other high-profile events. To address growth in these programs, the building addition included a band rehearsal suite with a large rehearsal space and high ceilings. In addition to the large spatial volume created, the suite has an effective combination of absorptive and diffusive acoustical treatment applied to the walls and ceiling. Practice rooms of varying sizes accommodate small group, keyboard and ensemble rehearsals. Multiple storage rooms for the music library, uniforms, and instruments were provided to encourage easy movement through all spaces.
